Volume for the midface

Cheek augmentation with hyaluronic acid

The cheek is the key to the whole face. When volume is missing there, the eyes look tired, the nasolabial fold looks deeper and the jawline less defined — even though nothing has happened at any of those places. With hyaluronic acid we bring the volume back to where it was lost.

What lies behind it

The face ages downwards

In a young face most of the volume sits high up: high, full cheeks, a narrow lower third. People speak of the “inverted triangle of youth”. Over the years this triangle turns around.

The fat compartments of the cheek lose substance and sink downwards at the same time. The bone beneath them recedes. What is missing above collects below — as a cheek fold, as a deepening nasolabial fold, as a blurred jawline.

That is exactly why we often do not treat the nasolabial fold directly. Injecting the fold alone fights a symptom. Replacing the volume at the cheek lifts the tissue underneath — and the fold relaxes by itself. Usually that takes less material than patients expect.

The process

How does the treatment work?

  1. 01

    Analysis of the midface

We look at where volume is missing — at the cheekbone, in the front of the cheek, or in both areas. In doing so we also assess whether your nasolabial fold, your under-eye circles or your jawline are actually consequences of that volume loss. Frequently the cheek is the cause and not the place where you see the problem.

  2. 02

    The treatment

    approx. 30 min

After disinfection and a numbing cream we place the filler deep on the cheekbone — there it works structurally and lifts. Where needed we additionally place softer depots further forward. We work predominantly with a blunt cannula, which considerably reduces bruising.

  3. 03

    Straight afterwards

The result is visible immediately. In the first one to two days the midface may look slightly swollen — that is normal and disappears by itself. Cooling is allowed, massaging is not.

  4. 04

A follow-up check after two weeks

Only then does the true final result show. We look together at whether to add more — deliberately in two steps, because an overfilled midface is the most common recognisable sign of a treatment that has gone wrong.

Your advantages

What changes

  • A more alert expression

A supported midface makes the whole gaze look less tired — without anything having been done at the eye.

  • The nasolabial fold relieved

If the cause is treated, the fold often relaxes entirely by itself.

  • Defined cheekbones

The highlight along the cheek returns — the effect that make-up otherwise only simulates.

  • Visible immediately

You see the result while you are still with us in the practice.

  • Fully reversible

Hyaluronic acid can be dissolved again within minutes using hyaluronidase.

  • Less material needed

Treating in the right place takes less material overall than injecting the fold alone.

Honestly speaking

The most common mistake in cheek augmentation

Too much. An overfilled midface is the giveaway that makes treatments obvious — the cheeks project unnaturally, the face looks broad and bulges form under the eyes when smiling.

That is why we work consistently in small steps and would rather invite you back a second time. Two millilitres, assessed after two weeks and topped up if needed, almost always lead to a better result than four millilitres in one session. If you come with a specific idea of the quantity that we consider too high, we say so openly.

A consultation about cheek augmentation at the Kuzbari Centre Vienna

A professional treatment requires three things

  • Experienced specialist doctors for Botox and fillers at the Kuzbari Centre Vienna

    Experienced specialists

The midface is one of the most vessel-rich regions there is. Anyone working deep on the bone here has to know where the vessels run. With us, treatment is carried out exclusively by specialist doctors with surgical training.

  • Sterile preparation of the treatment at the Kuzbari Centre Vienna

    Only the best products

Building up on the bone calls for a firm, shape-stable filler; the front of the cheek calls for a softer product. We select according to the region from clinically tested preparations by renowned manufacturers.

  • A thorough consultation at the Kuzbari Centre Vienna

    Time for the consultation

The cheek is rarely the place where patients see their problem. We take the time to explain the connection — and prefer to treat the cause rather than the symptom.

The most frequent questions

My nasolabial fold bothers me — why do you want to treat the cheek?

Because that is usually where the cause lies. The nasolabial fold deepens because the cheek fat sinks downwards and settles over it. If the volume at the cheek is replaced, the tissue lifts and the fold relaxes — often with less material than injecting it directly would need.

How much material do I need?

One to two millilitres are often enough for both sides; with pronounced volume loss, more. We deliberately start conservatively and add more after two weeks if necessary.

Will it make my face wider?

Not with correct placement. We build up at the cheekbone, that is high and to the side — which makes the face look narrower and more defined. It only looks broad if too much material sits too far forward.

How long does the result last?

Twelve to eighteen months. The firm fillers that sit deep on the bone last longer than softer products further forward.

Will people be able to tell?

Not with conservative dosing. What stands out is overfilled cheeks. Our aim is that you look rested — not treated.

Is the treatment painful?

Hardly at all. The fillers contain a local anaesthetic, on request we additionally apply a numbing cream, and we work predominantly with a blunt cannula.

Will I get bruises?

Possible, but less frequent thanks to the cannula technique. Slight swelling for one to two days is normal. Better to schedule the appointment one to two weeks before an important occasion.

Can I have it reversed?

Yes, completely. Hyaluronic acid can be dissolved within a few minutes with the enzyme hyaluronidase.

Does this also help my under-eye circles?

Sometimes indirectly: a supported midface softens the transition to the lower eyelid. With a pronounced tear trough we treat that specifically as well — more on this on our page about under-eye circles.

When is filler no longer enough?

When it is not volume that is missing but the skin that has slackened over a large area. Additional volume then emphasises the slackening rather than correcting it. In that case a facelift is the more honest answer — we can show you that in the same building.

What do I need to bear in mind afterwards?

On the day of treatment no sport, no sauna, no solarium, and do not massage the treated region. Cooling is allowed. From the next day everything as usual.

What does the treatment cost?

We charge per millilitre of hyaluronic acid — from €460 per millilitre, including consultation, treatment and material. How much you need we tell you in advance at the introductory consultation.
